Hope for probiotics to all the yoghurt takers
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:48:15 PM »
Hello all
I have just spent a weekend away at a conference on Ehlers-Danlos
The very last section of the last lecture was extremely interesting.
A top rheumatologist and gastroenterologist from London, Professor Aziz was talking about the way forward in treatment of inflammatory bowel problems.
He said that the biggest breakthrough was probiotics in normalising the gut flora and reducing inflammation.
Still in early stage of development but his idea was to treat with antibiotics to deal with overgrowth of harmful bacteria followed by ongoing treatment with probiotics
I'm going to follow this up and will keep you posted

Interesting. Especially since I partly blame antibiotics for my inflammatory bowel problems in the first place.

I don't suffer from insanity....I enjoy every minute of it!

Hi MadCat
Probably because they killed all the good bacteria as well. He is suggesting limited use of targeted antibiotics to remove overgrowth of bacteria that are causing the problems and then introducing a large quantity of the bacteria which are the normal gut flora
If you don't take out the harmful bacteria first then when you introduce a prebiotic substrate you just get an overgrowth and it's these that cause the inflammation
You just took the first bit of the sentence out of context.
I'm not suggesting that anyone should start taking antibiotics but just suggesting that getting the right balance of bacterial flora may reduce inflammation which in turn has a knock on effect in the body.
Perhaps there are other ways of acheiving this with diet but I'm particularly interested in this approach

BJ has been talking about this for a little while in the Vitamin D/Ibuprofen thread.  He's been suggesting yogurt to regulate the gut so that we don't have inflammatory responses to the foods we eat.

Yes I've been following the thread and am an avid yoghurt maker.
I also take probiotics from time to time.
Thought it was interesting that some science behind it is being used in a clinical setting

that reminds me EJ,  re a previous convo:exploring the easi yo site it seems they have tried in the past to develope a soya yoghurt but they had to withdraw it as it was unreliable. They said you can try making your own in there flask with soy milk (presumebaly the sweetened kind) but in their expereince results would be a bit hit and miss.

They are currently developing another soya one.
They saw most of the lactose in their standdard cow's milk one has been converted, so very little lactose there. I still don't wantto risk it while trying out being daiy free though, so have been buying soya yogurt.
I try and take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

That's really interesting pp
I have wondered how they can make yoghurt without lactose
I did try with soya milk but it doesn't seem to work

Interesting Ellie! I wonder if just having the yoghurt/probiotic would be enough to displace the harmful bacteria, or if an antibiotic is necessary. If yes how can we get an antibiotic, we would need to see a doctor who would be on board with this approach. Or perhaps take curcumin which has anti bacterial properties?
