« on: February 10, 2004, 03:05:39 PM »
I just came across Mahonia aquifolium on the net, If you try a Google search there are many web sites makeing all the usual claims most seem to make reference to a study in Germany claiming 80% of P sufferers showed improvement. I have tried a search on this forum but cant find any mention of it either good or bad...Does anybody have any experiance or info regarding Mahonia aquifolium.

Many Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul

I think this has come up before- I know I spoke to my suppliers about the essential oil - I'll try and find the information and get back to you

There was an article in the Daily Express about this some time ago which produced the usual "wonder cases" of people who had been cured by this. It claimed that in a one year trial in Germany 81% of sufferers experienced total clearance or substantial alleviation of symptoms.
It is apparently made from extracts of active alkaloids from the Oregon grape which are supposed to inhibit proliferation of skin cells and reduce inflammation. It is considered one of the most powerful herbal antifungals and comes as an ointment, shampoo, conditioner and scalp oil. The article says "M-folia (the name of the product in the shops) may be the answer". I think we've heard that before.
It does seem very expensive so I haven't bothered with it and neither am I recommending it -  I merely give this by way of more info for people to decide themselves. whether it's worth trying.

I tried it about 3 years ago...it worked for me for a while.  I had the cream and the tablets 30c.  The cream was nice to use and seemed to help a little.  I stopped using them cos it was starting to cost loads.  Its nice to try something natural, you never know it might work and its better than putting chemicals on and in your body all the time.  I'm always looking to try someone new.

This type of comment always frightens me. Natural products contain chemicals and are not inherently safer than manufactured products which often contain chemicals originally derived from a natural source (e.g. Aspirin). In fact, potentially, approved manufactured drugs may be considered safer as they have been extensively trialled and most risks are known whereas many natural remedies have only a dubious historical hearsay safety assessment. I am not saying that we should not try "natural" products but the assumption that they are automatically safe is dangerous.

I agree re comments on 'natural' products.

I was sold psoriagon as a natural product and it had a v potent steroid in , which was not listed as an ingredient.

However, there are guenuine products out there and certainly M Folia worked for a time for me.

I tried this too, did nothing for me and it did work out pretty expensive.  The only thing that seems to cure me is the sun and sea and relaxing.  Think it may be a stress related thing with me as it seems to fade whenever I am on holiday and come back as soon as I land in good ole blighty!! ;D
