Me, My P, and what works best!
« on: May 07, 2005, 07:37:42 PM »
Hi there folks, just thought i would like to share this with you...
i went seeing my derm about 4 weeks ago, with a view to starting UVB when they could fit me in - approx 6-7 weeks.

Since my visit to the derm i have been intent on 'self-help' until my appiontment for treatment came through (my P at the time was 65% coverage).
Anyway - after starting chatting to a woman at work who also has P, although hers has been under control for some time she said to try 'sanctury salt scrub' and a blast on the sunbeds (which i have always thought as a big no-no)
In desperation i rang my derm who explained that sunbeds were bad news, but agreed that if i didnt burn then a few blasts would be acceptable, so i tried it, 6 minutes 3 times a week, and a bath every night with this salt scrub and a nice 10 minute soak.....
4 weeks on my P is so much better -(except my scalp) infact only my stubborn areas, elbows and ankles have visable P on them. It has gone, clear as a baby's bum.

I know a lot of you will be concerned re the effects of sunbeds etc, but for me it is a small price to pay to be able to take my children to the swimming baths and on holiday Some thing i have never done due to my P .

I know the same treatment wont work for everyone, if only it was that simple, But I just thought i would share my news in hope that it maybe could help you too

Ineresting - I have been going to the beach when possible hope same tomorrow?
and as its too cold to swim.....although a few have been in brrrrr. I have been wondering if I soaking in the bath with dead sea salts before the beach would be good? i'm now thinking the night before might be just as good.
I would be interested from anyone whos been to the dead sea - how often do you bath in it when you are there, when and for how long?

Hi hove, use a big amount of the salts in the bath!

Hiya

I also found the Sanctuary salt scrub really useful when my guttate p was at it's worst. It would feel like it was burning for most of the day ( from about 10 mins after each moisturising )

My little sis reccomended the Sanctuary stuff cos she said it was really moisturising as well as exfoliating ( it's got lots of nice oils as a base for the salts)

What she didn't warn me about was the effect it has on any cuts you have. Fortunately I first tried it on one arm. After about 30 seconds it felt like my arm was on fire - really stinging. I ducked my arm in the bath and washed it all off. Anyway after 10 mins or so the stinging had all gone and so had the itching and burning ( at least 2 hours relief for me). I then carried on using it all over as the relief was definitely worth the stinging. I suppose it's obvious really as it is like rubbing salt in a wound but it did seem to be quite healing and soothing once I got over the initial shock.

Hi

I bought the Sanctuary Salt scrub from Boots. It's a jar (650g) amd from memory cost about £7. There's quite a few other items in the Sanctuary range so there probably is a bath soak as well but I haven't tried it. This stuff is really grainy with an oily base so you rub it on to exfoliate and then wash it off and have a soak to let the oils sink in.

The blurb on the top of the jar says it contains dead sea salts, sweet almond and evening primrose oils.

Small print on the bottom: sodium chloride, mineral oil, sea salt, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, wheatgerm oil, fragrance, evening primrose oil. So looks like more normal salt than sea salt but it did seem to ease my skin.

Hope that helps
Raine

HI
I tried a version of this, for all of you with loads of money!! (I was on a freebie for a press thing) There is a Jurlique spa in Chiswick, where they have a private room where they put high concentration of dead sea salts in a spa bath, and then on top goes this full length sun bed with the same wavelength as the dead sea area. It was bliss, but as I only did it once I cant say what the long term benefits would be. I also go for long hols each year, where I scrub in the sand at the edge of the sea, for a good exfoliate, then fry in the sun, the sun has got to be the best thing. I have a sunbed at my local health club each week, it seems to keep it at bay and looking better, and for the tricky scalp I have a UVB311 hair wand, which gets right down to the scalp.

Well , I don`t have "loads of money" and i`m very far from the"local health club" as I live in Romania...
Still wondering if the "normal" cooking salt can make the trick somehow....
Thanks anyway... :-/

Hi Hove
I started bathing in dead sea salts a few months ago.  For about three weeks nothing happened, then my p (guttate and plaque) got much worse.....then, it just started clearing.  I couldn't believe it.  4 months on, my skin is still much, much better.  I have the odd flare, but then it calms down again.  I buy the salt from it from You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login in 1kg tubs and use the recommended amount about 3 times a week in a moderately hot bath.  It does dry your skin out, so you have to moisturise lots, but I add coconut oil (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) in the bath at the same time - so much easier.   Makes the p really sting at first, but you get used to it.   I have to say it cleared my p by about 35%, so for me, it's worth the money.  Have a go and let me know how you get on - good luck!

The macrobiotic theory about the sun and sea salt helping P is that since P is an expansion and acceleration it is primarily a YIN cause and as Salt and Sun are the 2 most YANG things possible that letting them on the P neutralises the acceleration.

Hi eveyone. I can't try the dead sea salt baths as I have R.A. and can't get up and down in the bath but I do use the dead sea salt moisturiser. It's called ' spa  Dead Sea Majik ' and you can get it from Holland and Barrats for about £6.  It does help to keep the scales softer and I think it could help to improve the P with very long term use, especially if you can bathe in the sea salt as well. There is also a dead sea shampoo available but I haven't tried that yet.
Cheers. Carol.

Hi Minx - like the sound of the salts - 2 questions,
how much is delivery? and -
what is the make up of the salts? eg. magnesium etc.
The Yarden J Malki stuff i get has written on it
Magnesium Chloride min47%
Calcium Chloride max 2.2%
Sodium Chloride max 0.8%
Potassium Chloride max 0.5%
water of crystallization up to 100%
Not sure what it all means!!! but it sounds like some of the minerals are present from water analysis I have seen for the dead sea on the internet. Dont know the quantities though.
Paying £6.99 a kilo so happy to buy bulk if cheaper!
3 baths last week next planned tonight - will update changes!

Hi,
i've just started using dead sea salts (from holland and barrett).  These are £3.99 per kg bag.  I have looked around quite alot on the internet, but this seams the cheapest.  I use the whole bag in a bath then moisturise with boots aqueous cream (cheaper and better than e45).

Just a thought, and I stree that I have not tried it, but does anyone think that it would be worth trying domestic water softener salt?

It is not dead sea salt (what is the difference?) but at least softener salt does not have the additional chemicals which you find in domestic granular salt - which contains free flowing agents etc.

Just a thought :)

Plus, softener salt is about £5 for a 25kg bag  ;D

I have read somewhere before that the water hardness in some areas aggrivates P.  However when I looked into this myself I found that where I live (Edinburgh) has soft water.  Apparantely, the further south you live the harder the water is.  There has been reports of p sufferers using water softners in their baths (and you can get something to attach to the shower) and this has shown an improvement.

Hmmm.............water softeners.

They may help (I have one myself) but I could not say how much.

I live in Norfolk and the water is damned hard.

My P has certainly not cleared as a result of fitting a softener, but having said that, maybe it would have been worse without it - who knows!

I definitely find that my P improves when I swim in the sea though.
