Milk thistle?
« on: June 07, 2010, 02:33:36 PM »
I've heard some interesting things regarding Milk Thistle standardised extract, has anyone else had any luck with taking these herbal supplements? I've read on other forums that some people have cleared up their P completely with taking milk thistle..?

The 2 things I know about milk thistle.

1) Its supposed to be good for your liver...we with p may have poor liver function (unproven).

2) Studies show it reduces tumour necrosis factor (tnf alpha) this is a big player in p/pa.

I would say give it a go & see.

Cheers, yeah I've read a few articles now and from that, it's believed a dysfunctional liver can be the problem with P.
I'll give it a  try, I've ordered some super potent milk thistle tablets so wish me luck!

I've been taking milk thistle from Holland and Barrett for some time.  I don't believe it clears P (certainly not in my case) but it helps restore liver function ... like every else anyone who claims to CURE P is economical with the truth  - take it with a grain of salt, because those of us who have lived with P for longer than we care to remember, realise there is NO cure; there are, however, several management programmes and it's trial and error to find which one works best for you.

Currently I'm on the fresh veggie juices and fruit smoothies twice daily together with supplements to include milk thistle, folic acid, selenium combined with zinc, calcium and vitamin D3 (for bones); glucosamine (for bones), peppermint to aid digestive system, probiot supplements (for a month); and have just had a course of uvb which has sent P into remission.  Moisturising regularly (twice daily) is also strongly recommended.

Wishing you the best of luck finding out what works for you, try to ease off dairy products - perhaps thereafter, wheat products and see if those make a difference too - I've gone off those and alcohol as well.  It's not soo difficult once you begin .. 21 days in and euphoria takes over (!); they say the first 21 days of any lifestyle change are the toughest - thereafter you can achieve anything.  Keep a diary too and revert back to it if you have a flare to see what the possible causes might be.

But milk thistle alone will not CURE P - it may, when combined with additional helpful practices, relaxation therapies together with diet/lifestyle change, aid your immune and digestive systems ... let us know how you get on.

Meantime

Hello.Dear.. :)

Milk thistle has shown in research to inhibit human T-cell activation, which is something that occurs in the body of a person that has psoriasis, which means that milk thistle can help to inhibit the outbreaks of the disease. There are some cases where milk thistle should not be taken even for people that have psoriasis, and this is when they are also taking antipsychotics or male hormones. This is because the herbal supplement can have adverse affects when combined with either of these two types of medications.

Milk thistle can be found as a supplement in tablet or liquid form in health food stores and when taken regularly many psoriasis sufferers(Like Me) have seen some relief from the condition.

Good Luck.

I have been using milk thistle from Boots for about 3 weeks now, first week i took it twice a day however reduced to once a day and there has been no improvements, dissapointing really. You always think "this time it will work".

oh well....Maybe next time :)

I've read where milk thistle is really most effective when taken with lecithin.  When I added lecithin to my daily dose of milk thistle I notice a sudden decrease in itching.  But no other changes, and when I returned to taking milk thistle/lecithin some months later I didn't notice any changes whatsoever.

I don't discourage folks from trying milk thistle/lecithin.  But I think its potential impact on psoriasis might be overrated.
