My Diary - By: Paulmh
« on: February 20, 2010, 04:51:11 PM »
Ok, here goes!!! I mentioned a few days ago that I would try the diet which was suggested by totoro some time ago and have a last begun this treatment.

:: Introduction ::

I’m soon to be 26 at the end of March and have been suffering with Psoriasis for almost two years now, it all started with a small patch on the base of my spin, as well as dry skin on both knees. Followed were two patches on right hand side of my stomach – at this point I decided to visit the doctor.

Sadly for me I found my GP as much use as a rabbit without any batteries who simply told me that I had Psoriasis and that should it get worse then I should return to see him, back then I knew of no alternatives nor this fantastic message board.

I’m not sure if the condition is caused through stress but the time my grandmother spent in hospital before she passed away put me through quite a bit and I must admit that had it not been for the great support of my ex-girlfriend then I might be a wreck (or not even here) right now.

However months later it worsened and I was really concerned; I therefore re-visited the doctor who prescribed me the usual creams, at this point I was lucky not to suffer with this on my forehead – after a while I found that strong cream seemed to be working but wasn’t on prescription whilst the less stronger of the two just stopped the itching.

After a while of being unsuccessful in the cream department I went back to my doctor again who once again prescribed me the stronger doss as well as extra cream for my forehead as this part was now suffering too :(.

At present my Psoriasis is at its worse, though I admit I have stopped using the cream and need to go back for another prescription.

The last time I visited my GP he did then suggest that I try hunting around the internet to look up the condition; (my GP isn’t into all this alternative medicine) and that’s where I found the American site who promptly advice me to go here instead as it may be more useful.

I have been tempted to try the alternatives, and to date I have tried using baking powder in the bath as well as a concoction of lavender oil, bergamot and other essential oils on my skin to ease it, I find that both (particularly the bath) make me feel more relaxed but as far as heeling my Psoriasis it’s a no brainer.

Now, I plan on trying the diet (this has also been suggested by someone else I know) which in a nut shell means I have to stop eating rubbish and look after myself more. However I can’t eat red meats (white meat is good!) and more fruit & vegetables.

So far I have sort of stuck to the plan, though I have had two hot chocolates in the past two days and don’t think I’m allowed them. I have been eating Bananas with my lunch (had two today) and have so far for past two days had Ham sandwiches at work.

I do plan to alternate this and next week start the blending with a mixture of fruit and vegetables and take as a drink; I have also supplemented milk with sweetened soya (Tesco own brand) and it doesn’t taste as bad as I first thought.

At work though I shall stick to regular semi-skimmed in my Tea as it’s difficult for me to use soya whilst at work – this diet is going to take some getting used to and probably will need guidance along the way into exactly what sort of foods I can eat (or can’t). For example how would Yorkshire Puddings effect my Sunday lunch.

I shall be brave and take some photos of myself to help show progress; I shall also weigh myself regularly to see how it effects in that way too.

Watch this space for regular (ish) updates...

Paul, great idea for starting this thread.  My only suggestions, as you might expect, are:

1) It is time you really nail down as to whether dairy or gluten (, or something else, ) is a trigger for your P.  I cannot emphasize enough that even the smallest amounts of these foods can completely stymie all your good efforts if either of them prove to be a P trigger.  You need to abstain from these foods 100%, not 99.9%.  I suggest you focus first on dairy.  100% removal from your diet for one week.  If no progress then move on to gluten, and so on (..try soy, peanuts, legumes).

2) Related to #1 above, be *extremely* careful with foods that come packaged or are prepared commercially (eg, in a restaurant).  Gluten and dairy are so pervasive.

I'm glad to see you have the right attitude!  Just be very, VERY patient.

PS - the suggestion of vitamin D supplementation is a good one for those living up north (, like in the UK).

Good luck with the regime Paul and hoping for great results mate.

I manage to keep using my alpro light soya milk at work as we have a couple of fridges scattered around and luckily no one else can stand soya milk!  ;)

Also find rice cakes to be a good alternative to bread (bit dry, but hey)

Lazza, I have no idea what causes my Psoriasis to flare up - it could be dairy related or it might not - at the moment its just trial and error. I plan on going back to my useless doctor (ill see a different GP) and ask to see a dermatologist (sp?) and see if my condition can be improved that way also.

I shall add vitamin d3 too, as less sun in scotland.
@lazza
shall i eliminate dairy too or continue with gluten only to see further improvement?its just a week i have started guten free diet.

Great to hear about your son's improvement!  As for dairy, it is your call.  Personally I would give it some time for you and your son to adjust to a gluten free world.  Going gluten free requires effort.  You can then try dairy free.  Of course you can always start slipping in dairy substitutes; I just love almond milk.  But there is no correlation I know of wrt dairy sensitivity and gluten sensitivity.  It can easily be one or the other.

As I pointed out earlier today in another thread, dairy is not terribly good for anyone other than infants.  If I had a child I would steer him/her to veggies/fruits and away from dairy, regardless if P is involved.  We all LOVE dairy.  But in the best case moderation is called for.

PS - you should discuss your son's apparent gluten intolerance with his GP (or pediatrician).  He might want to have him take a battery of allergy tests.  My theory, or should I say guess?  ;), is that young folks with psoriasis or more likely to be hit with food (and other) allergies that spark psoriasis whereas oldies like me getting it are probably a victim to a gut that has suffered damaged from years of neglect/abuse.  I say this because it is typically younger people (< 25 y.o) who get allergies anyway.  However oldies like me can develop food sensitivities as a result of poor digestion and toxic elements (eg, infections) in the gut.  ...again, my theory.  No flames please.

Great post Lazza, for me personally I'm not sure what causes my P to flare - though I do know that before I started this my diet wasn't the best and did need a kick up the bum to start looking after myself more (P or no P).
