My way
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:18:32 PM »
I want to present my way of coping with P. It is not based on meds, I use them only occasionally for treatment of the really refractory lesions.

- no dairy (all kinds - milk, butter, cheese, joghurt etc)
- no wheat (I eat only small amounts of the whole grain rye bread based on leaven, not yeast)
- no sugars (rafined, candy, chocolate, cakes etc). I use xylitol when I have to sweeten tea.
- I drink mainly water (a lot of it) and decaffeinated tea (sweetened juices I consider to be harmful for me)
- no artificial beverages (you know - coloured, preserved ...)
- no nightshades
- no red meat (pork)

I eat a lot of buckwheat and millet groats, sometimes I partake whole grain rice (brown) to diversify my diet.
I consume a lot of fish dishes and vegetables.
Poultry? Yes, 2-3 times per week.

Munchies - almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds (I like especially that one)

That diet is the base.

And the most important:

- probiotics
- coconut oil (2 capsules per day)
- sedative herbs (before I go to sleep)
- cod liver /omega-3/ (5 caps per day)

This regime (plus supplements mentioned above) is sufficient to keep my P in check but do not make my skin completely clean.

And now: something really great (I've discovered it recently):

FLAX-SEED (linseed).

In my country it's been used for gastrointestinal problems for ages. It helps to cure the lesions in the stomach and the intestines. Patients with ulcers use it for years (two spoons per day). Hence I reckoned it is quite useful and fitting for me. Since I had been using it for about a week my stomach pains, gut cramps finally dissapeared.

- 1 spoon of Flaxseed (linseed)
- grind it in the mill (coffe grinder will do)
- pour that powder into the glass
- add boiling water
- stir it a few minutes to cool it (it becomes gelatinous due to the mucilages)
- drink small sips
- use this twice a day and do not exceed that amount

Purchasing of already ground seeds is not recommended due to a short stability of that form (fairly quick oxydation of the unsaturatted fatty acids). You should grind it yourself and better not to store ground seeds. Simply grind a small amount and use it shortly after.

After several days of using it your skin becomes incredibly smooth and if you are lucky (your body responds to that) your skin is purifying from the rest of the psoriasis plaques and flakes.

Read in the net about the benefits of the flaxseed and its influence on our skin.

My skin is healthy as never before and I dunno what was the cause: coconut oil caps (I've been taking it for about week)? flaxseed (I've been using it for 5 days)?. Hence I continue with both.

Thanks for sharing that, Kyle, your program sounds very good, I like the probiotics  and ground flax seed ideas. But why not replace the cod liver oil with vitamin D capsules as the vit A contained in cod liver oil is too high and may be toxic? In addition vit A interferes with the action of vitamin D in your body.

I didn't study that issue (cod liver vs other sources of vit d) so thoroughly, I rather focused on the unsaturatted fatty acids and the cod liver is high in those. You may be right nevertheless. It is pretty difficult to overdose on vit D by taking a few fish oil capsules a day I guess, but it's reasonable to be careful, especially if we are talking about vit A. Though I consider those several capsules of cod liver oil safe for me. Ok, let's treat it as inconclusive question, for the time being at least.

Maybe I am wrong but I do not attach a great importance to the vitamins as far as the psoriasis matter is concerned.

In my main thoughts I center around the gastrointestinal issues, not on the external curing which I consider to be pointless. I am looking for the way of caulking my guts to prevent its excessive permeability for the food components - especially those with the well-known allergic properties: caseine, lactose, gluten and others. Those supplements (coconut oil, fish oil) I consider as an addition. Flaxseed is my remedy :) (I hope so).

Hya Kyliereese. I`m very interested in trying anything to improve my psoriasis. My psoriasis. is the worst its been for years. Plastered except my neck+ have few bits on my face.  Prob end up back to hosp. I have started taking omega 3 fish oil caps, but read somewhere that too many can affect your lipids. Where do you get coconut oil capsules from+ are nightshades just potatoes? Most of what you cut back on I eat and drink, so I`ll try cutting down or cutting out. Thanks :)...x x

Hello Scratchy

Probably you will never get rid of psoriasis if you will continue with bad dietary habits coz those improper customs can make your disease permanently refractory. You will be constrained to highten doses of your meds and to widening the spectrum of them. It leads to nowhere (IMO).

Believe me - the proper diet is the key.

This is the beginning. You should implement it into your lifestyle first of all.

The dietary regime do not have to be drastic. You have plenty of good foods everywhere around you. Find them. It's easy. They can be tasty as much as other foods. Besides, you can gradually wean yourself off some tempting dishes. Just start it today. Now.

For example:
Buckwheat with fish (i.e. mackerel, salmon) plus tasty vegetables (steamed or boiled). Isn't it tasty?

Millet groats, roast chicken (however with a little amount of salt - A LITTLE, without pungent seasonings like curry or pepper), coleslav or carrot or fresh cucumber (NOT PICKLES) or sauercraut - isn't it tasteful?

When you are addicted to artificial beverages you are not really content while drinking pure water. Why? Bacause your sense of taste become deformed over the years. After a couple of days of pure water drinking you will love its taste, I assure you.

Avoid caffeine though, also juices (especially made from citrus fruits). Yes, they are unfavourable for P sufferers (even though they give great benefits for the other people). Our guts are very sensitive. Don't ingest foods that make your guts much more irritated and more permeable.

Alcohol, unfortunately;), is harmful for us. It vastly impairs your mucosa.

You probably will be able to drink and ingest mentioned above prohibited foods (in reasonable, tried amounts) in the future but only after you will cure your guts first.

I know, I sound like a preacher. Sorry, but I have had to swallow that bitter pill myself but now I am coping with that very good. I don't feel deprived (early feeling), now I feel much more tough and strong and I do not intend to come back to previous habits anymore since I've noticed a great improvement of my health and skin most of all. Additionally I sleep well, I don't suffer from itching, I am full of energy.

Coconut oil? Yes, you can buy it in capsules. Search the web. I don't want to advertise any particular product. Choose yourself.

Nightshades - potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant

Titbit of news:
In addition to what I mentioned before about the flaxseed:

In flaxseeds were found lignans - hormone-like substances which are probably responsible for increased level of estrogens in the blood of people eating a small amount of flaxseed daily.

In the web you can find a lot of stories of women claiming that their psoriasis disspaeared (or greatly diminished) during pragnancy. Pregnancy goes with the elevated levels of estrogens. The source of these estrogens is the placenta.

Maybe this is a reasonable connection (though I am not sure of it). Hitherto it's just a rumour.
