Not convinced about nightshades
« on: March 14, 2007, 09:25:18 PM »
Hi folks

I've been trying out a few things with my diet over the past 2 years including dairy free, reducing salt, increasing fish and salads etc and of course cutting out nightshades such as tomatoes, potatoes, chilli, peppers etc. I have to say that after nearly a year of not eating nightshades I'm not convinced its made any difference to my P. Within a week of giving up coffee I noticed an improvement, within 3 weeks of lowering my salt - an improvement was noted however the nightshades don't seem to have done anything. Tomatoes are full of antioxidants and vitamin C. These nutrients are an essential part of any healthy diet. The hardest of all though was the humble spud! I'm half irish and boy have I missed them! Not any more though because included in my fortnightly shop this week will be a huge bag of Brtitish spuds and quite possibly a few tomatoes and peppers as well  ;)

I got myself tested and found out I was intolerant to them.

Easy process.

 Hello Grand theory,

I have eaten tomatoes, potatoes and peppers since always.
I think fruits and vegetables are very important.
And I agree............They are an essential part of a healthy diet!
Hope you have a couple of very nice dinners this week.

I'm not sure what is spud but I hope you enjoy the missed taste
back in to your month! :D

GT, I hope you get to enjoy some soft, melt-in-your mouth, buttery, crispy roast yummy potatoes  ;)
I used to be ok with potatoes but now I can't really have them - I can get away with maybe a few now & again but mashed potato is like an enemy invasion  :'(
When I was younger & I was going through a good skin time - we actually had our own tomato vines & we would get loads of tomatoes off them everyday, so naturally we were eating lots.
And because they were so delicious & sweet & hot from the sun, I could get through about 20 all at once!!!
Naughty  ;D
But my skin was fine.
I am merely a reflection of my cultural heritage - my irish ancestors ESCAPED from the potato famine, then met up with spanish Tomatina eaters  ;)

Hi Andrew, hope you don't mind me asking - but what did your intolerance 'tests' involve. Was this done by your nutritionist?

Thanks

Yes I used a nutristionist and identified food groups I was intolerant to. For me all the nightshades were there as the bad boys

Thanks Andrew, more like in a 'watching-out' food diary keeping way then ... ie) no post-chip saliva swabs or blood tests  ;)

many food intolerance tests seem to be totally unreliable a, study a whileback tested them all and they couldnt even rpoduce the same results twice. really the only way to test intoleerance is to restirct back to a very simple diet and then graudally add thhings andnotice which ones make u itchy or sleepy or your skin worse.

jadey r u sure you are not allergic to butter/milk in mash potato. without tkins potatoes tend to be less allergic so its odd u say specifically mash. i think its the gunk your mum is putting in them hehehee
