Psoriasis, could it be the opposite of leaky gut !
« on: April 18, 2006, 03:59:56 PM »
Here is my two thoughts for the day

THOUGHT 1
I actually had the tests at biolab for leaky gut and it came back negative. Anyway it suddenly hit me that perhaps psoriasis is the opposite, its not that we have leaky gut and toxins escape into the body at all perhaps its that we arent absorbing the food properly in the 1st place ! Undigested food is becoming toxic within the body and the body goes into inflamation to try and break it down.

This may go along with the "peyers patch" thing. The body then develops allergies because it wasnt able to digest certain things previously.

The upshot of this would be
- to use a product to clean the digestive tract out
- take a good probioticwith antiinflammatory properties
- cut down on hard to digest foods and keep things simple (ie as nature made them)
- you can ofcourse include old staples like removing meat and nightshades as i have found this hlped a lot !- use digestive enzymes when you eat for a month or so.

THOUGHT 2
Recently the science world was wowed when a young girl had her original heart reconnected after a transplant heart eventually failed in her. It turned out that her original heart (which was still in her body but on much lower duties due to the transplant heart) had repaired itself. They summised that because low useage had taken place for so many years the heart had had time to repair itself.

Again this got me thinking that if u allow the gut time to heal by keeping foods simple, replacing lots of melas witth juices (veg and fruit) then the gut will regenerate itself.

Now i know this isnt revolutionary , we all know the gut can repair, but i just thought it was a striking example and one to bear in mind. The ley to this story seemed to be give the body time to heal by demanding less from it. ie let the gut rest. Whether it is leaky gut or peyers patches and food not being devoured properly...

I have not really researched too much about causes to be able to declare it is this that or the other, but like you I am a believer that it is connected to our digestive system, because my two friends who got psoriasis like me when we were younger life was easier, food was cleaner and it was not as toxic.
My friends like me became under lots of stress, we ate one too many processed food ( or else we thought we were eating good but we were in fact not as meat is no longer meat, fruits are covered in chemicals etc) and then i got psoriasis, my friend got psoriasis and solved hers by eating fish and green veggies, and another friend of mine and her family are all breaking out in skin conditions.
We are obviously being poisoned by our bodies and environments, it is re-addressing the balance.

I think a big part with me is I do things excessive, like having yoghurts every day until I developed an allergy, eating fish every day until I developed nausea, if I like something, it becomes my flavour of the month and I will eat it until i am sick of it, dates, fruits etc, so I think that is my weakness and one I need to address, because previously to my bad flare up I was having jacket potato more or less every other day etc, variety and keeping it clean and simple is the key, not to mention minimal amount of stress and some exercises.

I too try to eat well these days, but don't vary my diet enough I feel.  This is because though I don't want to eat processed foods, (I used to be a takeaway junkie) I don't cook very well,  so I find something simple and go mad, for all my inbetweens I eat loads of fruit and loads of yogurt then like you, Heidi, get fed up of it.

I can well understand where you're coming from Stuart.    Thats why I think this detoxing may be a good thing.

I am a complete believer that it is digestive-and I don't digest my food properly (I won't tell you how I know that, but it's gross). I eat as healthily as I can, I'm already a vegetarian and I make such an effort that most people my age don't need to, it's annoying.

Some good thought there, stewart and heidi x

Shreena, do you bring your food back up? I do not mean make yourself sick but in that you find you cannot digest some food and it finds itself back up?

Well, not really-I'm very strange because I'm rarely ever sick-I learned to control my gag reflex when I was younger. I used to drink alot of alcohol (wrong crowd at the age of 12! What is the world coming to???) and it took me a while, but even when I needed to throw up I would control it so that I wouldn't. I know that I don't digest properly becauseI had gastric flu and I was sick for the first time in 8 years, and food from 12-16 hours before came out whole! I mean, actually whole. Pasta, rice, cake, everything.

I know from other stuff as well, but thats the main indication  :-/

Blimey! :o That must have been a shock to your system! Have you taken stepped to correct that? in order to break down the food and digest it?
I find certain food I eat does not stay down with me so I have to avoid certain food.
The body is a strange thing eh?
I am veggie like you also, been one since my early teens!

I went to the doctor's after that, it's o ne in a loooong series of weird things my body has done lately. Mind you, I think it's the after effects of my misspent youth-I spent 4 years going out till 5 am three times or four times a week from the age of twelve, drinking and smoking myself stupid, sneaking back in, going to school running on lucozade-it's hardly surprising my stomach is not very happy.

I've been a veggie all my life-the closest I've ever come to meat is gelatine. Most people think that is really weird!

I take it your family do not eat meat either?
I just decided to eat give up meat when I was about 13/14, as I didnt really like the taste, I still eat fish though, stopped milk as it does not agree with me.
I did lots of serious booze binges when i was younger also, I was so silly, I used to drink straight spirits, mix my drinks and on holidays I would spend every single day binge drinking, so my body has been through a lot.
I also used to have an eating disorder when i was younger, i was either very good, or very bad, there was no inbetween with me, so my body took a lot of battering, I am still controlling to a point in that if I like a certain food I struggle to eat other things, I could easily eat the same thing non stop every day until my body doesn't like it anymore! :o
I always went gym 3-4 times a week, ate very healthily, took lots of supplements, but since I went to Turkey two years ago and did a terrible binge drink session and ate meat my psoriasis went from mild to moderate, and still today I am struggling to get it under control (hence the UVB and Pagano diet!) doesn't help I am very stressed in general.
We will get there in the end through sheer willpower and control!
Just wish it werent so bloody hard and time consuming!
No pain no gain!

I'm sorry to hear that you had problems as well when you were younger, hun. I guess all we can do is keep battling! I have gone (almost) tee-total now, partly because I act stupidly when I'm drunk, mind you.
