Xyllitol is very interesting stuff in finland research it was shown to kill off bad mouth bacteria. It also tastes just like sugar. Its £9 a bag but you get a BIG BAG

Problem with Xlitol is it is highly laxative and leeches several key nutrients from the body... it tastes as artificial as aspartame and sacherine IMHO.  You also cannot cook with Xylitol, it breaks down into some nasty chemicals

Trust me I'm a diabetic, the best sugar substitute at the moment is Splenda from Tate and Lyle, it's Sucralose, which is made from chemically altered sugar.  It tastes of sugar cos it's madefrom sugar, it is very low calorie and has no effect on Blood Glucose levelsas teh body cannot absorb teh  sugar molecule.  It can be used directly sponful for spoonful as a substitute for sugar, adn can be used for cooking, importantly in baking with no breakdown.
