Scalp Psoriasis
« on: January 14, 2012, 11:37:03 AM »
Hi everyone!

I have been suffering from scalp psoriasis since I was a baby.  My mum told me it was mild as a baby as both my parents and the doctors thought it was cradle cap.  Up until the last two years it was pretty mild and only got bad if i suffered any stress in which it would flare up.  I was still able to hide it and wear my hair up without too many people noticing it.  In 2009/2010 I was pregnant with my little boy and the psoriasis seemed to clear up quite a bit but not long after I gave birth to my boy it flared up the worst it has ever been and has travelled all over my scalp (it was originally only at the bottom of my hairline at my neck) and even into my ears.  It has really started to get me down because of how bad it is, it is really inflammed and can feel as if it is burning quite a lot.  I can no longer wear my hair back or up as it is far too noticable and I am quite embarrased about it.  Recently a lymph node appeared behind my right ear (harmless lump) but because of my psoriasis it reacted with it and a harmless lump turned into me being extremely ill and requiring to attend hospital.  I have attended my doctor numerous times and many different doctors but they all seem to not seem that bothered about helping and just say that there are creams and shampoos to help but its not treatable.  I have tried numerous shampoos and creams which used to help slightly but over the last year and a half nothing is making difference.  I was wondering if anyone has/is suffering from something similar and if they know of any private treatments that may help as this is really getting me down and I will try anything.

Thanks for reading this and thanks to anyone who may be able to help!

Hi Pamela

I too suffer from scalp psoriasis. The problem excacerbated when I was made redundant and followed a major operation on my hip.

Having tried all the shampoos and creams etc. I went to my doctor in desaration and she prescribrd Dovobet Jel. Within a couple of weeks there was an improvement and about a month after using it the scaling was clear. It might not work for you but is definitely worth trying.

Hi!

I had pso since i was 6 and i get it pretty bad on my scalp from time to time. There's 2 things that has worked for me every time, it/s disappeared within 2-3 weeks with no traces left and that is Dermovate scalp application, it stings like hell in the beginning but it's worth it The second thing I've discovered (cause since I moved to Australia I haven't been able to get dermovate, don't think it's sold here) is Neutrogena T Gel shampoo & Conditioner. The shampoo doesn't smell very nice, kind of like tar but the conditioner makes up for that. Unfortunately it doesn't work wonders on the rest of my body, it just clears my scalp pso. Moving to Australia though is one of the best moves Ive done, during the last 4 years my skin has been the clearest it has ever been. I guess I just needed to get away from the Scandinavian climate och live somewhere where i can be in the sun all year around ;)

I find the Oreal dandruff shampoo helps a bit (the one in the dark blue bottle with orange writing).

However, the thing that helps mine more than anything is the humankind organics psoriasis shampoo. Smells lovely, but more to the point, has stopped all the skin flakes all over my iPad as I run my hands through my hair when I'm working  ;D

I have Scalp P really bad also. My doctor prescribed Taclonex Scalp and it works wonders! It doesn't sting but it is a bit oily. It takes some patience but I used it every day for about 3 weeks and my scalp is clear. The makers of the drug also offer a coupon to pay your co-pay (if you have one) since this prescription is quite expensive.

It was hormones that made your p go away when you were pregnant and then come back. Had that experience twice so you should know its normal.
If you take the pill then that can also affect it.
You could try using and SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulphate) free soap/shampoo. If you have thick crust on your scalp/around your hairline you can put baby oil on in the baby and then comb out the crust/flakes. I often put coconut oil around my hairline it makes the p less noticeable whilst moisturising the skin.

Hi Pamela

I do so empathise with you. I've written several posts on the forum about my continuing experiences of treatments: pharmaceutical,  topical and even systemic as well as safer alterntive ones.  I've followed the advice of just about everyone on the forum and have various levels of success...but I still find myself feeling very upset that nothing seems to work long-term. Have a look on this section of the forum at artworks' comments on 'alt shampoo for hair blizzard' (I think...memory's poor, yet I've just checked that page so that I could relay iot to you). There's a short 'you tube' video presentation about a product called Doo Gro. Have a look atthe video. I bought some, am using it every third night, overnight, shampooing with Halos 'n'Horns (any UK supermarket among the Kiddies' shampoo/bathcare etc.. - cheap as chips)   or Yaoh Hemp Shampoo and Conditioner in the morning, gently scraping the crustiness away with a nit comb and it's doing a great job. That and some ongoing online assistance from a guy who's helping me sort out the 'scratching/picking' issues (you may not do this, but I have done for many years and it simply exacerbates the crustiness of my scalp).  He's introduced me to an extremely effective yet simple way to stop what has become a compulsive behaviour.  In the past I've used Hemp Oil or Olive Oil .. in a similar way to  Doo Gro but the latter seems to be working better. It is less acidic than the oils I've used. (Olive oil is quite acidic). Yaoh's Hemp Salve  is really good too, when the scalp is sore. I sourced Doo Gro from a supplier on ebay but have since found it cheaper at 'Jinny's Mall' and will buy from there next time.

Humankind organics psoriasis shampoo and conditioner are excellent too (several forum members have used and commented favourably on the products recently).  The business owner makes all her own products. She is extremely helpful because she has direct experience of our 'condition' within her own family. Unfortunately for me, it seems I'm one of the very small percentage of people who has a reaction (allergy?) to tea -tree oil, so the shampoo and conditioner haven't worked so well for me. I've fed this back to her. She's so obliging, however, that it wouldn't surprise me if she preps a shampoo without tea tree just for me and others like me. Do contact her through ebay (humankindorganics) if you want further advice about her products. She has many very happy clients world-wide.

Scalp psoriasis IS sooooo embarrassing, - like living in a permanent snow storm - but many people on this site have far worse problems to deal with. I saw a dermatologist in Greece a few years ago. I felt extremely affronted when he told me, after looking at  my scalp, 'Your psoirasis is nothing'! Since then I've realised he's right, though.  We just have to find ways of keeping it at bay. I'm anxious at present because it's spreading down my neck and onto my forehead, with patches on my nose, lips...but it's winter and even here in Greece there's less sunshine. For me natural products have worked better than any of the prescriptions I've had, including shampoos such as Capasal, which has SLS in it. Avoid SLS totally! Put a few drops of rosemary oil in your shampoo and conditioner 'dollops' - helps to stop the itch (has the added bonus of restoring your natural hair colour too - my greys have gone!).

Best wishes
Scalp
