Stop baths/showers?
« on: August 18, 2011, 06:45:55 PM »
Hello everyone I have just put a bit about myself on the history/introduction thread. I just wanted to say that the last doctor I saw told me not to bath/shower too often, just to wash underarms and groin/private parts everyday he said frequent washing destroys the mantle of your skin. Well anyway I am doing it. Anyone else heard of that?

Yes blueash, that does make sense. This is easier to do during winter as one sweats less. Of course in summer when it is very hot, you might need to bathe daily! Putting on moisturizer immediately after showering helps.

I heard the same about shampooing your hair too often. I now do it only once a week.

I've been doing that for the past two years. 3 showers a week and daily wash of the sweaty parts works for me. You could also try washing with aqueous cream rather than soap - that works well for some people.

he said frequent washing destroys the mantle of your skin.

I think the main problem is people tend to have hot long showers or long soaks in a steaming tub. They also tend to use harsh soaps and body washes.

The hot water combined with the chemicals in bathing products, will strip the natural oils from your skin, making it dryer on cellular level over time.

So you could try having cold, cool or lukewarm short four minute showers and then patting dry.

You could also try using an unscented, uncolored, chemical-free soap. Most supermarkets sell chemical soap (even if it says “natural” on the packet), so you may have to buy the soap from a specialized store online or health food shop.

Raw Gaia in the UK has some lovely pure organic cold-pressed oil soaps. And there is a farm in Aberdeenshire Scotland that makes their own natural goats milk soap. When I had P, I found washing in goats milk soap to be very beneficial.

Unless you live in a hot country year round, or have a heavy sweaty job…..I really can’t see the point of showering every day. Best just have a traditional English winter shower (i.e.) towel wrapped round waist, bowel of warm water and a flannel.

I don't suffer from insanity....I enjoy every minute of it!

at a recent hospital appointment i saw this Tub - i asked what it was & the nurse said this is brilliant for psoriasis - I have been using for the past 2 weeks and have to say - i wish i had found it years ago - its call HYDROMOL - its a 3in one conditioner i place a large clump of this stuff in a dressing then when i shower i simply turn shower off this stuff lathers up and the dressing is like a sponge - its like being covered in heavy conditioner its just brilliant - im completely clear atm - not sure how long it will last..

if you get your creams on the NHS then this is a must to add..

Definitely follow your docs advice, but my experience speaks the contrary. I used to not shower as often as I do now, and one thing I saw very consistently is the massive yucky build up of oily dead skin (from moisturizers daily) which I would think made it worse. Skin always looks/feels better after showers.
