Success ... for now but scars?
« on: December 08, 2011, 05:07:19 PM »
A few weeks ago I posted here after trying a number of "alternative" treatments (Vitamin D, vaseline, and Dead Sea salts). I had a remarkable improvement with these but didn't know which had helped. I stopped everything but the Dead Sea soaks. My patches continued to disappear. Having never had all the scaly skin disappear before and now with even the raised red skin reduced to just flat pinkish/reddish areas that don't even itch I wonder if anyone could tell me what to expect? Do I have to keep soaking in the *very* expensive dead sea baths (2 cups per bath!). Are the red marks left just scars or are they just lying in wait! Does anyone have similar experiences with whatever treatments they might have tried?

Thanks

Hi Lauren,

I have never tried your cocktail of remedies, but I can relate to how you may feel.

In 2010 I was advised by my Derm to take Acitretin, a course of PUVA and an alcohol free regime all at the same time. Even though the leaflet that comes with Acitretin advises you to keep out of the sun!!!

Well, my P almost completely cleared, but I still have no idea what caused the clearance. And I will never do that type of triple "attack" again.

Suffice to say that after two weeks of stopping treatment, my P was worse than ever. About 80% coverage.

I am now on Fumaderm, which is not without it's drawbacks, but the clearest that I have been in about ten years.

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Lauren,

Glad you are seeing some sort of improvement. When my P clears (it does every so often!) I get just red patches, then these fade and I am left with white marks where the P was and this is due to pigmentation. The derm assures me that these will fade in time and they do, trouble is by the time they've faded the P has started to creep back & I'm back to square one! The weird & wonderful workd of P!!

xx

Hey Lauren

Like Nicky my P patches eventually fade to a lighter pinky white colour - eventually this will return to a normal skin colour (a bit of sunshine helps with this).  However frequently while one patch is getting better another one is developing.

Fingers crossed improvements continue for you!

the first time my patches started fading off, some areas wouldn't tan and just remained kinda whitish.... it turned out it was 'tinea versicolor' or what is commonly known as tanning white patches... i had to use selenium sulphide 2.5 shampoo for a couple of weeks before they started getting better... :)

Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment. I am so invested in the possibility that something other than the good old nature of the beast itself (i.e., remission) actually had an effect that I have to remind myself not to get stressed out and check my skin 100 times a day!! I guess I'm going to keep doing the baths 3x a week; keep up with the 1000 units of D; and see what happens. If they come back I'll let you all know.

hi Lauren, why only 1000 IU vitamin D? Most of us are deficient and need closer to 4000 during the winter, especially if living in Northern countries, at least you could go up to 2000 assuming you don't have sarcoidosis or parathyroid problems. Toxicity from vitamin D is rare and the dangers have been overblown. Vitamin D helps psoriasis as it modulates favorably our immune system, and it helps prevent heart disease and cancer.

Here is a good site about vitamin D:

I have a conservative doctor (although living in Canada I probably should do more)! Thanks for the link. :)
