Thanks bj - good to know you're always there :)
I am getting a d test done through grass roots health - so it will be interesting to see what my level is after 4-5 months at 3-4000ius.  then I may switch to the soft gels.
I started my husband on 3000 about 2 months ago and he is hooked claiming he hasn't been as cheerful in the winter for years! ;)

Interesting study on selenium, BJ! I hope you can find the original study; were some of these people given a selenium supplement or was this just an observational study with the selenium level in the blood measured and then correlated with cancer risk?

A lot of us are doing a lot of sun exposure, or PUVA (me for 20 years+), or NBUVB, so we are probably more prone to skin cancer. If more studies in the future confirm this result, that would be great. In the mean time it is reasonable for us to take a selenium supplement, especially since as you pointed out people with psoriasis have low selenium levels in the blood.

Last week on the US forum you posted a lot of studies on selenium with respect to psoriasis and inflammation, some were positive others negative, so a bit confusing to know what to do, but I think on the whole it's a good idea for us to take selenium (you have for the past 6 years and you didn't die, ;D and your psoriasis didn't get worse from it).

hi eve...i still have questions about it though.. i think they measured the blood levels ...those with the highest had the lowest skin cancer rates.....but on the other hand..its supposed to increase tcells numbers..perhaps not good for us...i don't know..

hi Kat...no one knows that answer.....or if ones risk is greater or lessened by most supplements, diets or lifestyles..

with selenium even more so...adequate levels may prove to be effective in reducing the risk of some cancers...thats what the studies are for..so far, some look like it helps, and some don't. Good levels seem to increase longevity...too high levels seem to shorten it..

i take it...people get it from the foods in the chart i posted...many in the uk are low..it might be something to consider..but if you already have cancer..i don't know...i see where if one has had breast cancer...adequate vitamin D is important in maintaining a remission so it seems , some supplements can help but which and how much i don't know You are not allowed to view links. Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune - without the words
And never stops at all

And sweetest in the Gale is heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm

I've heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest Sea
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb of Me.

There are many problems with a number of these studies , here's two more studies on selenium...the first says it increased one form of skin cancer..the second claims it reduces the same form as well as another of skin cancer substantially

from 2003
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login based on i believe this study You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login which shows some very positive effects of selenium

 and 2009

as suggested in the second abstract..it might be a u shaped curve...with too little or too much selenium being the less desired...but at the suggested  higher blood levels  a 60% reduction in skin cancer is impressive....

one might assume, if they are both accurate..and the dosage in the first was 200mcg/day...somewhere between may be the sweet spot indicated in the second..probably the only way of knowing is determining what dosage results in an optimal  serum level as indicated in the second study ...approx 2.0umol/L.....so i calculated that out for selenium and optimal serum levels for that good effect are 102-221 ng/mL..now to find what dosage we need to attain that serum level..this dosage may be especially interesting to anyone who gets quite a bit of uva/uvb.

finally one last study on severe inflammation and the need for selenium You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
