Xmas Dinner
« on: December 26, 2010, 10:28:05 PM »
Just a query really...

what did everyone have for Xmas dinner?

We had the full traditional Roast everything ;D  We've been aiming for very low gluten (not quite gluten free cos I don't do all the stuff like glutenfree ketchup etc) for a while, and have been on lower dairy for years, but AFAIK, the "meat & 2 veg" type dinner is perfect for that.....  But my sister, who claims her baby is allergic to dairy, said that she couldn't eat "hardly anything" of their Xmas dinner.  I can't really work out why,but then again, I can't work out much of what my sister says about the poor child's eating habits ;)

What did everyone have and why?
Nothing is so simple it can not be misunderstood

I had slow roast turkey, pigs in blankets, Roast spuds, cranberry & herb stuffing, roast carrots and sweet potato, cabbage, bread sauce and gravy. Washed down with red wine, quality street and gin.

Why? Because that's what my mate put together!

Have been trying to stick to the gluten/ dairy free diet lately too, but one day off and not much reaction with skin this morning (a bit more flakey), although my brain was a bit mashed  ;D

Ate with 10 of my family and I had roast turkey, sprouts, parsnips, carrots, avoided the roasties but allowed myself the stuffing and sausages  as a treat (been avoiding nightshades and bread  for the last 4 months and will continue now to do so). Could have had gluten free gravy if i was bothered about gravy. Also allowed myself a generous dollop of cranberries - 1st 'added sugar' in 4 months. Thoroughly enjoyed it all.
Had a luscious pint of green smoothie during the afternoon (pak choy, banana, pear and ginger). And a few dates  & nuts for pud (never been a 'normal' pudding fan).  As you suggest - meat and  3 veg perfect if avoiding dairy, nightshades & gluten.
I am avoiding dairy, nightshades and gluten to try and help my skin as Humira wasn't working. Now it is (with addition of metho) but I have really got into healthier eating and loving the daily green smoothies and have lost over a stone in weight (14lbs) which can only help my joints and over all health.
Hoping the diet will help skin in the long term whenever I may need to come off H and it does seem to be helping long term energy issues. I have no clear obvious signs of allergy or sensitivity but trying to maximise health and minimise inflamation.
I try and take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

I did roast free range chicken (turkeys were too big) pigs in blankets, roast parsnips, roast potatoes, brussels, carrots, peas, homemade sausagemeat, herb and walnut stuffing, cranberry jelly and lovely thick gravy made with the juices. Was well proud of my second time at making xmas dinner and washed up as i went so no mess either  ;D and yuk to christmas pudding so we had lemon cheesecake.
Why is it people get hung up about cooking xmas dinner, tis a doddle
And unless its going to kill you why worry about the diet on christmas day?

I had/made a buffet:

Roast beef with a wholegrain mustard crust
Marmalade glazed gammon
Roast turkey
Quorn roast
Vegetable pie with cheese pastry
Sausagemeat stuffing
Pigs in blankets + a veggie version
Roast potaoes
New potatoes in herby butter
Mashed potatoes
Parsnips in mustard and cheese
Buttered carrots
Yorkshire pudding
Hot pasta salad (special request from 1 of the kids)

Chocolate log
Christmas pud with brandy butter, rum sauce and cream

Cheese board

I did this as a buffet to make it easier for me. I did as much as I could in advance. It also meant that we all got a hot dinner of our favs.

Wish we'd been at yours for Xmas dinner Ria....sounds amazing! Can you post the parsnip recipe for me to try....and explain what 'pigs in blankets' are?
We tried a Turducken this year for something different. It's a boned out turkey that is stuffed with duck breast and then chicken, and between the layers is a seasoning of your choice.... I opted for fig and pistachio.
It was pretty awesome both in appearance and taste, and really went down well with everyone. Had also tried a couple of new salad and veg recipes (Go the potato bake with silverbeet and gruyere!) which were a hit, plus a couple of frozen desserts. All in all was well pleased with my efforts, and needed to go polish my halo after all the compliments were received!
Even allowing for the diet that Jim and I normally follow, there was nothing there that couldn't be consumed in moderate portions....so anyone who finds fault with their dinner, needs to just blow it out their ear Keren!
